I didn`t even question when Arctic was advised to me.

  9. If the goal is to get Red up and running in any way possible, I can add another option to the table. I have the following graphics cards: Winfast GeForce PX6200 TD 128 MB - Like new. I still have the box and manuals (pity they're in Chinese). This was a temporary card when my main one was in for warranty repair.Winfast GeForce PX6600 TD 128 MB - Well used. No box or manuals. Both of these cards are severely lacking in horsepower. BUT they use very little wattage which means that Arion's 300W PSU could become feasable after all. In case it's needed, I also have a no-name 350W PSU which may or may not be better than Arion's one. Given the hard life that it had, I'd bet worse though. I'm happy to post any of these to the US. Let me know if you want photos or anything.
  10. I completely disassembled the whole box, cleaned everything, reassembled it carefully and... it booted up! I guess it hadn't fried itself after all. Anyway, what I learned from this excercise is... don't attempt to recycle the good bits from your old computer unless it's a really new old computer. Off to the other thread to offer some help for Red.
  11. Well, I'm going to try a full stripdown and rebuild of the computer just to rule out that I plugged in something wrong. If no miracles happen, I'm happy to send over any of the parts listed above if it will help get Red up and running. I checked the postage prices and they should be reasonable provided I'm not sending the entire case.
  12. @ _echo - THanks for putting it into perspective. I guess a high-end 2006 GPU is kinda ideal for Oblivion. Two items that I forgot to add to the list: 2 sticks of 2GB DDR2 RAM 2 sticks of 1GB DDR2 RAM This strengthens the case for going with a 775 CPU / Mobo since going the 1155 route will necessitate buying DDR3 RAM as well. Interestingly, certain i3's and i5's are heavily discounted here due to oversupply resulting in the Core 2 Duos and Quads being more expensive to obtain! I'll see what I can find on the used parts market, but at the moment, it seems that recycling the parts will cost as much as getting a brand new low-end computer (once again due to massive discounting over here). @ Willie - It's a possibility... I might end up discarding the project if it becomes economically unfeasable. If Red can cobble together a computer from everyone's used parts, why not?Caveat: I'm in Hong Kong so shipping might cost more than the parts!
  13. Well, I finally managed to blow up my old computer. However, it left behind the following bits and pieces that can be re-used: GPU: GeForce GTS250 1GBPower: GTR PTX-500M 500WCPU Cooler: Deepcool ALPHA 200 ST (PWM) Socket 775 CPU Cooler (may fit in some 1155 boards)DVD Drive: LiteOn iHAS524 24X DVD/CD WriterMonitor: 24" LCD monitorPeripherals: Plenty of mice and keyboardsWhat would you build out of it? What level of CPU would best match the GTS250's capabilities so that one isn't constantly bottlenecking the other? H77 motherboard to save money or Z77 for future proofing? (Note: I already have another gaming rig so maximum gaming performance isn't mandatory for this one.)
  14. Two indispensible sites: STEP and GEMS. STEP recommends a whole bunch of mods that improve the "vanilla experience" (better textures, bugfixes, stuff that that should have been there all along) and most importantly, have been thoroughly tested and proven to work well together without causing crashes or savegame corruption. GEMS is a list of some of the best gameplay mods available.

Ooh! Very nice! Add some bling and it will look a lot like Inigo Montoya's sword.
  16. I swear by NMM for Skyrim, but find that it doesn't work well at all for Oblivion. I always install Oblivion mods manually, creating a BSA if the mod comes with loose files. I mod Oblivion so I probably find this easier than those who don't. I use OBMM for the load order. For some reason, Wrye Bash and I never got along, though I'd say it's probably a better mod manager than OBMM.

  18. Hello Brandon! Welcome to the world of modding, one of few pursuits that require both technical and creative ability.
  19. Hello lonewolfe10. That's how the modding bug always starts - you see something in the game and then ask yourself "what if..."
  20. Save the civil war questline until later. You'll get to talk to many people who have different opinions on the Empire or the Stormcloaks, and that will help you decide which side has more merit. Also, as you can probably guess, the civil war quests are all about... war. There will be a lot of fighting. At low levels, you might be chugging a lot of health potions, but at a higher level, it's a good way to level up neglected combat skills. Edit: PS - love the glowing multi-colour wolf!
  21. How about I recommend some exciting older movies that the younger generation might not have had a chance to watch? Do you find old movies to be kind of... slow? I know I do. Even when watching the classic Star Wars, I find it a little slow compared to today's fast paced movies. It's worse when I watch stuff from the 50's and 60's. Anyway, here are some great movies from the 80's that you definitely won't find slow! Airplane! (1980) - The birth of deadpan comedy and precursor to movies like The Naked Gun series. It's basically a parody of 1970's disaster movies and is so saturated with sillyness that you can't help but belly laugh from beginning to end. And don't call me Shirley. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - Everyone has heard of Indiana Jones, but have you seen the movie that began it all? A fusion of mystical Egyptology (which everyone finds fascinating), one breathtaking cliffhanger after another and just enough humour to keep it light hearted. There's no CG here - when you see someone inches away from being run over by a moving truck, there really IS a stuntman inches away from being run over by a moving truck! This realism adds more to the excitement that you could imagine. Thing, The (1982) - Horror tale of an artic outpost that encounters an alien something. It builds up the biohazard fear factor until it goes off the scale. Its amazing use of props and practical effects creates a creature gorier than the best of todays CG creations. Watching it, you'll be afraid to touch ANYTHING or trust ANYBODY. Forget the inferior 2011 prequel. Terminator, The (1984) - This where the franchise started with Arnold Schwarzenneger as the infamous cyborg. The first thing you'll notice is that this is actually a low budget movie, but with James Cameron at the helm, he transforms the cyborg into the most relentless, terrifying assassin ever to hit the silver screen. The first half is a bit on the slow side (by today's standards) and feels like a typical police procedural, but the ending will leave you gasping for breath. Back to the Future (1985) - A delicious action/suspense/comedy mash-up of what happens when a teenager accidentally goes back in time 30 years, meets his parents when they were teenagers and tears a hole in the fabric of the space-time continuum. Supported by the definitive mad professor who converts a Delorean sports car into a time machine. I wouldn't put this movie on this list unless it has laughs and/or pulse-pounding excitement beginning to end and in this case, it has both. Aliens (1986) - IMHO, the best of James Cameron's movies. This is the movie that popularised the grizzled space marine trope. A group of badass soldiers armed to the teeth with hi-tech weaponry go to investigate a distant mining colony that has lost contact... and they get their butts kicked. The most relentlessly exciting movie that I've ever seen. Everything in Aliens franchise that came after this was sadly inferior.
  22. If you're trying to make a letter or book with the PC's name in it, I don't think that's possible. But if you want a script to store the player's name as a string and use it elsewhere (e.g. in a Messagebox, making a container called "[Player]'s Storage Chest"), there are a couple of functions you can use. string_var Name ;Declaring variable --------------- let Name := Player.GetName [Reference].SetName $Name GetName stores the PC's name as a string variable that the script can use later. In the above example, [Reference] was renamed to have the same name as the PC. CopyName Player [Base Object] Pretty straightforward. [base Object] will end up with the same name as the player.
  23. With the TES Alliance website being moved to a new server, you may have heard things like "We're waiting for the DNS changes to propagate". You might also have noticed that the server move seems to happen faster for some people than others. What's going on? What on earth is a DNS? Doesn't moving a website to a new server happen instantly? Different Languages The root of the problem is that humans and computers prefer different languages. A human being would think of a web address as something like www.tesalliance.org. On the other hand, a computer sees a web address as something like 198.154.215.186 (known as an Internet Protocol, or IP address). So when you type www.tesalliance.org into your browser, something has to translate your instruction to 198.154.215.186. DNS - the Human:Computer Translator That something turns out to be a thing called a Domain Name Server, or DNS for short. Think of a DNS as being like a guy with an address book giving out directions. When you type www.tesalliance.org into your browser, your Internet provider will ask the local DNS for directions. The DNS will then reply "TES Alliance is at IP address 198.154.215.186! Go there now!" Sometimes the local DNS address book doesn't have an entry for the site you want to visit. So what it does is ask its neighbour. It keeps asking until it finds a DNS who knows where TES Alliance is located, and then copies the IP address into its own address book. All is well and good. We have a system where humans can type a web address into a browser, and the computer can translate it into an IP address, either by itself or with the help of some friends. Moving House When DarkRider moved TES Alliance to the new server today, an interesting thing happened. Not only was the website physically copied to a new location, the new location has a different IP address. All of a sudden, the address books of ALL the DNS's around the world have the wrong IP address for TESA! How does this correct itself? No problemo. TES Alliance has a primary DNS that tells the world "We've moved house! We are now at IP address 198.154.215.186!" Its new DNS neighbours will update their address books almost straight away and start spreading the word. Other DNS's will hear about the address change and start updating their address books as well. This process propagates around the world until every DNS that has TES Alliance in their address book has updated the IP address. This propagation process may take a few days to fully complete. And there you have it - that's the reason that moving a website doesn't happen as instantly as you would expect. And you can now sound like a geek any time you want by saying "TESA is waiting for the DNS changes to propagate."
  24. What's the purpose of the website? Usability or a display of your artistic ability? Some of the world's top websites (Amazon, Google) have exceedingly simple links and navigation. They're not as pretty, but they work the best for the masses. The mosaic and flashlight ones above look awesome and would be great for a graphic artist's website for example, but wouldn't work if you were selling products or providing information.
  25. I have a huge amount on my plate right now with the Knights of the Nine: Revelation Expansion Pack, offering to help with the Tavern Mod and battling illness at the same time. But once all that is out of the way, Black Marsh is a mod that I would love to see completed!
