Morrowind Modding Workshops: Shaders

Date and Time: Friday, August 14 2:00 AM GMT (Thursday, August 13 7:00 PM EST, GMT-5)

Presenter: Peachykeen

What is this?

We are presenting live modding workshops using a chat format to teach modding methods and techniques. The goal is to have group interaction to enable everyone to learn exactly what they are hoping to learn, and make the most out of the topic given by the presenter.

Peachykeen will be presenting an introduction to creating visual shaders for use with MGE.

Requirements:

1. A basic understanding of the functionality of MGEgui.exe

2. Morrowind, Tribunal, and the Construction Set installed.

4. A web browser and internet connection capable of running Ajax Chat (the same chat client on GHF.)

We intend to hold several of these workshops over the upcoming months. Hopefully they will help many of you learn a lot of new tricks and gain new ability when it comes to modding. That is our goal!

Some that we are working on bringing to you in the near future:

* Introduction to Scripting

* Introduction to MWSE Scripting

* Introduction to the Blender Interface

* A General Lore Discussion

Everyone is freely invited to join in, whether you intend to create a mod or not. There is no cost nor obligation to GHF of any sort (you don't even need to be a member of GHF to participate.) However, to help offset the costs of operating GHF and all of our sponsored sites, there is a suggested donation of $2.00 for participating in the workshops. Again, don't feel obligated, we don't wish to pressure anyone. But it will help a lot, and be greatly appreciated...you will be helping to ensure the long-lasting future of GHF and all of our various endeavors!

Thanks to all who have given support to this endeavor of hosting these workshops!

One thing I want to make extremely clear:

This is not a technical workshop!

You don't need to know any programming, code, shaders, anything!

You don't have to have ever seen code before in your life!

You don't even need to know how to work shaders, we'll go over that first.

I have a complete, step-by-step, tutorial written out. You don't need to know any programming ahead of time.

There are three main bits to the workshop:

  • What shaders are and how they work
  • How to install and use them
  • Making a simple one

The shader we'll make is a vampire vision one. It will make everything gray, and make all bright spots turn red. It's a lot simpler than it sounds, and everyone will be able to do it.

We'll be going through it line by line, and I'll explain how each line works.

If you can understand decimal numbers and simple algebra (it'll be about what you'd learn in early high school), you can figure this out.

As for tools, just a working MGE. It has the shader editor in it, which we'll be using. You don't need anything special.

Just wanted to announce this here, if anyone cares. :huh:

If you've ever wondered how these work or what goes into one, I'll be going over it step by step in detail, but keeping it simple. This is basically a beginner's course on shaders.
