TESA's First Modding Challenge

---------------------------------------------

The Oubliette is the first Official TESA modding Challenge inspired by this upcoming Halloween, which will be here before we know it! For this challenge, I will create a core.esp called the Oubliette, a scary room with many doors (I will post pictures of the Oubliette core once it's finished). Each challenger will submit a unique and terrifying interior cell to hide behind each door. Once all the entries are submitted I will merge them into the Oubliette and link the doors. On October 31st, the project will be released exclusively here on TESA for the players who will then vote for the interior cell that gave them the biggest scare. The one voted scariest will be named the winner!

The Challenge: To create the best overall scare experience in an interior cell as part of TESA's Oubliette.

Rules:

  • Entries must be submitted by 11:59 EST on October 28th.
  • If you want to participate you must sign up officially (See How to Enter Below)
  • Your entry must contain at least one interior cell, but no more than five.
  • Only one entry per challenger and that challenger must be a solo author of that entry.
  • The overall theme must be horror genre.
  • You may use modders resources, but nothing from DLCs including SI.
  • You must repackage any resources to the correct file path for the challenge. (See Additional Information Below)
  • If you use modders resources, you must include a .txt file with your entry containing the credits for those resources.
  • You cannot reveal any specifics about your entry to anyone, no screenshots, vids, or chat.
  • Your interior cell cannot contain obvious clues to your identity; we don't want people voting for their friends.
  • Your entry must have a way in and a way out, so two doors. You can overlap the doors and use disable/enable to switch them with a script if you are script savvy, or two separate doors so long as you have an entrance and exit planned.
  • Your level cannot be OBSE dependent, or dependent on another mod.

Who Can and How To Enter:

Any member of TESA may enter the challenge, even new members, with the exception of Admin staff (namely myself and HeyYou as we will remain objective). We also welcome member of BGS to join in the fun! To enter, send a PM to "DarkRider" subject "Enter Contest" and let me know you are interested. You'll be added to the official Challengers list.

Judging:

On October 31st, The Oubliette will be released for download on TESA and the players will vote in the release thread for the cell that gives the best overall scare. Any voting ties will be broken by the Senior TESA Staff. Polls will be closed and the winner announced by November 8th.

Prizes:

  • A Special Feature on the Homepage!
  • A Unique Forum Medal!
  • A Gift Certificate to Amazon.com (or iTunes Store)!
  • A Special Challenge Winner Sig Bar!

Additional Information for Challengers:

  • All interior cells must begin with aaTESA
  • The entrance/exit door for your cell must be the vanilla door object: Ungrddoor or RFHallNAgedDoorLOAD01
  • Every challenger will receive credit in the final readme.
  • Each Challenger should include a .txt file containing any information about your entry I need to know, including CREDIT information for any resources used.

File Paths:

  • File path for meshes must be Meshes\TESA\Halloween01\(category)\(item name)
  • File path for textures must be Textures\TESA\Halloween01\(category)\(item name)
  • Custom Menu icons should be in Menus\Icons\TESA\Halloween01\(category)\(icon file)
  • Custom Sound Objects should be added to Sound\fx\TheOubliette\(category)\(sound file)
  • Voice files should be in Sound\Voice\TheOubliette.esp\(race)\(gender)\(voice file)

Here are a few shots of the The Oubliette exterior. This is not part of the contest, just the staging ground for the contest entries. If you are going to be playing though and don't want any surprises spoiled for you, don't look.

Are there any guidelines on buidling these dungeon? Like things we cannot put in, or that ruins your story of the dungeons?

Nope, the story is designed to explain away many fantastic and different levels of terror within the Oubliette. The only guidelines you need to stick to are to make sure your scare doesn't involve adult material, such as nudes, and those outlined in the rules. :D

From what I remember from my convo with Gstaff is that all DLC content is not allowed to be redistributed, I am not sure to what extent the work has to be modified to make it your own (50%+ I remember hearing) and allow you to release it. I have seen SI stuff released before but it still has reliance on SI to work.

A bit off topic and I apologise, but who is Kelran? a Beth dev maybe? :D

Kelran Tymus is a mod on BGS and an attorney, so she often gets the distribution questions. :)

The answer to this one is a no unfortunately, Bethesda does not want any SI resources being distributed that are not dependent on SI. We excluded SI from the challenge so that everyone can play whether they own the DLCs or not. The only way to legally include an altered SI mesh is to make the mod SI dependent.

So for the competition it's a no go. Is there perhaps a similar vanilla mesh you could alter instead? Or a resource maybe? :D

[EDIT] Cool sig by the way BC.

damn, aight, guess i'l make do with out it :D

BTW, thnx for the compliment on me sig biggrin.gif but i can't all the credit tongue.gif since Insanity did the text and the cool feint slanted stripes unworthy.gif

I know, curse those distribution laws! LOL I was floored when I found out that I'd have to make RST SI dependent because I used an SI court planter. :D I scrapped it and used something else.

Your part of the sig is pretty wicked too, looks great pulled altogether. :)

hey DR, i was thinking about the mod 2day and i had some, well, thoughts :sour:

-i think there should be a script that when you enter the fort nighteye can't be used

-i also think the competition should have multiple "levels":

I mean the players can vote for the overall scariest room, and the that winner would get the prizes you mentioned, but think the official "tie-breaker-judges" should also vote for the room with the creepiest atmosphere, the room with the biggest shock-scare, most original concept, most disturbing, etc. etc. Granted the winners of such categories would get a prize per say, but i think the recognition would be nice :D.

This way it gives the modders who aren't as good at scripting a chance (creepiest atmosphere, and those who maybe can script but are not as adept at cluttering/furnishing a chance (shock-scare), and so on and so forth.

Just thought i'd throw out those ideas :rolleyes:

Not sure we can stop people from using nighteye, when I release the mod on Halloween I plan to make certain recommendations such as not night using night eye, life detect, or music for that matter to enhance the scare factor. Can't help it if some folks want to be babies though and hide behind their shaders!

I have planned out some "runner up" awards so everyone will get a nod for something.

Well, I'll give it a shot. I have three weeks to figure out how to script a stupid message, put the finishing touches to my "Fort Doom", and figure out how to upload something to Tex Nexus. What's the worse that can happen?

Besides Sims 3 destroying my computer once and for all? I'm going to kill you, EA! Or at least sue you.

Xinimator make sure you PM DarkRider and let him know you want to join the challenge, details are in the first post

Regarding the night eye, I know there is a rough way of stopping it and that is to use a quest script which runs every frame that checks to see if the player is using a night eye spell by checking for the spell effect and then dispelling it. Its rough but I am sure it would work pefectly well.

Hey all, i have recently been asking DR a few questions that i thought might be important for everyone to be clear on. So anyway, here is a kind of a mini-FAQ

-Hey DR, are you going to participate in the judging of the rooms? I have a few questions but they might give away which room is mine.

No, the only judging I have is the tie break if one occurs which is unlikely as I can easily scrounge up some mate to play through unbiasedly and break the tie.

I will have to see all the entries anyway when I pull it all together so you can ask me questions and reveal details it's okay.

-I might want to have some guards inside my cell, but i'm unsure what to call them. "Oubliette Guard," "Oubliette Watch," "Imperial Guard"?

For the guards, you can just use "Imperial Prison Guard" since Oubliette only refers to a small part of the complex.

-What should i call my cell? Should it be "(name of inmate)'s Cell," or "Cell (some random number)," or just come up with a name completely unrelated to the base such as "The Dark Room," etc?

The rooms you guys build are not single prisoner cells. They may contain some cells or cages to hold prisoners, but should not have "cell" in the name. Rather should have names like "Examination Room" "Experimentation Hall" "Bloody Chamber" etc.

-How long has this place been abandoned? should any guards/npcs be living? just killed? zombielike? skeleton?

Probably been abandoned a long time, like Sancre Tor, the Oubliette seems to be under some sort of curse or powerful enchantment, so ghost, zombies, skeletons, even people are fine, whatever fits your vision. The Oubliette doesn't exist in the real world anymore, so once they enter the portal, there are no rules so to speak!
