New cable modem

Telepathy: you know it makes sense! Er anyway, I think I'd be inclined to go for the rental option personally: at $5 a month it'd take until ... thinks ... the 82nd of February 4280 to pay for itself and I assume that the rental includes things like upgrades, maintenance, configuration embuggerences (or lack thereof) and so forth. As long as it doesn't prevent you doing your own thing in future I think I'd pay the fiver to let them worry about it instead.

What HeyYou said. Your opinion may differ, pros and cons for each. (Up here there's really no choice, you rent it)

That said, looking at cable modems on newegg.com they all appear to be fairly standard technology wise. You want 802.11 wireless access point, USB and Ethernet connectivity, the highest upload/download speeds within your price point. Personally I wouldn't go for a firewall, just adds more to troubleshooting.

Ah cool Hana thanks. I din`t think the modem had to do with Upload/download speeds. Good to know this. I`m not going wireless though, cave`s just not that big. I also have firewalls aplenty on my rig, and being hardwired keeps the cretins at bay,no?

I think it helps. Personally I don't trust wireless because of the fact that it uses witchcraft to send messages across the ether, but cables do have the advantage of being rather more reliable and simpler to configure, and a wireless connection is also harder to trip over.

Something else to bear in mind is, your cable company may want you to have an addressable modem, I.E. they want to be able to talk to it. Might wanna give 'em a call, and see if there are any 'features' they require..... or, specific models they suggest. They might even sell 'em.....

From personal experience I own my own cable modem now. After 3 years of renting and dealing with their services calls and constantly swaping out their boxes to only give me another abused used one that had problems I bought my own and haven't had any problems for the past 2 years..

I you purchase your own ( mine around $50.00) all you need to do is call the cable company so they can get the MAC address off the modem so they know its you. Mine is a Motorola. I figure if I have to replace it every few years (at worse) I'm ahead of the curve by not giving them rental fees. The deciding factor here was they intended to charge me to come out and test their equipment @ $32.50 a visit. I said its your equipment why are yo charging me? And that settled it.

Ah, good points HeyYou and Arion that`s my thinking too. Good point about checking with the cable folks.I`m really glad I posted this. Thank you all so much. I`m kinda looking at the motorola SB6120 but I`d better check further.

This is a good piece, I've been using one for quite a while, no issues, and it beats paying $60.00/year :D
