Downscaling image size

So i'd like to make this image smaller, without losing quality, and i cant find a way to do it via gimp. Current image size is 2656x1840. I want it to be 2048x2048. If i use gimps rescale image, it makes it 2048x14xx or something similar. Thanks in advance.

You can make it the size you want in Gimp. If you look just to the right of the size options there's a little thing looks like a chain. Click it to 'break" it and then you can resize it to any dimensions you want without autosizing.

You're going to have some graphical anomalies from going from a rectangular resolution to a square resolution though.

You're going to have some graphical anomalies from going from a rectangular resolution to a square resolution though.

With the image he's using I don't think that's going to be much of a problem, plus it's always something that can be fixed

You can also try selecting an area of it that's 1840x1840, then scale that up to 2048x2048 if stretching is a problem.
