A 'small' issue

So in the past week and a half to two week time I've been having some issues with viruses for whatever reason. All of a sudden AVG started getting active(overly active personally) and been hitting viruses and such repeatedly. Now yesterday I for some reason was unable to connect to the internet through my router with my PC. Okay so I go and check the router through my laptop, doing the usual IP address of the factory, the 192.168.1.1 and it picks it up, showing that it's working. Now I do the same on my pc? no go, won't even show or connect to that at all when it was plugged in. So now I'm working through being connected directly through the modem like I had when I first got online back in.. 2005 and had used a router since the fall of. Now suddenly I have this issue and this router's been pretty good and I have the sneaking suspicion that somewhere something in the registry got effected. The antivirus showed something involving the NetBT file being infected.. so I had deleted it, ran net and it pops up.. so apparently it runs on demand.

Now I have a few options

I tried going into the registry and fixing that way... still no go

deal working without a router and try to connect my consoles directly to the modem that way

Fix the issue somehow without heavy work and things resume as normal

Grab my windows disk and try a repair that way which could be dangerous

Save everything I want on my external, messenger stuff files, mods ect ect and do a full reformat and do an upgrade while I'm at it. And just go use my laptop in the meanwhile

Or just deal for now

Course if I had the money... I'd just go for a brand new rig.. pick what I want and try going for more power. and go windows 7. Needless to say it's been.. mildly stressful and aggravating.

It sounds to me like your router is just fine, so let's troubleshoot the PC.

You have three options:

1) Buy a new hard drive, get that up & running, and rescue the data from your old drive

2) Reformat your existing drive & reinstall windows (note: you can & should try to back up your data to CD-R's, thumb drives, or any other removable drives you have first, and you should *only* copy media/documents/etc and not programs)

3) Try to clean up your existing hard drive with your existing Windows install.

1 or 2, you don't need to really do any troubleshooting, just make the decision.

If you go with 3, the first thing you need to do is identify the virus you have. AVG is popping up warnings, and they probably give you the name. Let's have it!

Yeah oddly my firefox was set to use system proxy settings. I just need to sit down find a setup tutorial for my linksys router as it's been.. a long time since I did a setup for it. I think I can settle it by redoing my router. But I know I got some odd virus as it's making this little "ding" sound... occasionally.. like you try clicking on something and you can't. That I can deal with, the lack of a router makes my ps3 net connection useless.
