Graphic Artistry; Lesson #1

After using the FO3 Archive to extract the Thalmor folder to my new Extract folder, I had these files dds of interest – thalmorboots - thalmorgloves – thalmorglovesf – thalmorrobes – thalmorrobesf.

Next, GIMP 2 was opened and the thalmorrobes.dds file was loaded from the Extract folder into the

GIMP graphics program. The Hue way then increased by +90 and the modified thalmorrobes.dds file was then supposed to be saved using the Save As, however, however, that is impossible in GIMP if the 'dds extension is desired. The modified thalmorrobes.dds file was saved using the GIMP required Export [File] option. Of course, other than the command used, save the file as desired. The export setting were set at a compression type BC1 / DXT1 and to generate mipmaps. These actions are shown in the next group of images – Fig 01 and Fig 02.

Figure 02 Hue modified Thalmor Male Robe texture on left, and export setting on the right side.

Following the export, the dds was placed in the Skyrim/Data/Textures/Clothes/Thalmor directory. Skyrim was started and the two Thalmor robe types viewed. The one modified file was determined to have modified the two robe types of Thalmor clothing, but only when a male wore them. The identical

robe transferred to a female had none of the Hue modification. This can be seen in Figure 3, below.

Figure 03 The same hooded robe on male and female left, and same non-hooded on the right.

The FormID: 0010C698 is the “ClothesThalmorRobesHooded†Item ID, while the FormID: 00065BBF is the “ClothesThalmorrobesâ€. Outside, in Skyrim 'sunlight' the green modification can be very difficult to actually see. Inside, the hue modification is distinctive.

The addition 4 Thalmor clothing dds file were modified in the same fashion and the image details are given below.

Figure 04 thalmorboots.dds - copy opened on left, and Hue modified setting on the right.

Figure 08 thalmorgloves.dds modified and Export settings left. At right, mod show on male only.

Figure 09 thalmorglovesf.dds (Female gloves) copy at left. The Hue adjustment settings at the right.

Figure 10 thalmorglovesf.dds modified and Export settings left. At right, mod shows on a Female.

Figure 11 thalmorrobesf.dds (Female robes) copy at left. The Hue adjustment settings at the right.

Figure 12 thalmorrobesf.dds modified and Export settings left. At right, both types shown.

That covers all the requirements, I do believe. If I missed anything, please let me know.

:smarty:Smarty Says: Depending on the 2D application of your choice you may see a message asking whether you want to load MipMaps and other additional data, select yes to this so everything loads correctly.

Part Four: Saving our texture

When saving a texture you have to keep in mind what you need saved, for most textures the compression type will be DXT1. DXT1 saves the basic texture and non of the extra fancy stuff we'll be learning about later on.

Click File>SaveAs so we don't overwrite our original texture in-case we want to go back later and do things differently. Now you will get a little popup box asking you what settings you would like to use when saving, let's take a little look at what these are:

Photoshop users will see this box:

PS_DDSSave.jpg

GIMP users will see this box:

GIMP_DDSSave.jpg

Compression: This will allow us to select which compression type we will use for our textures: DXT1. DXT3 and DXT5. Each one allows us to save data a little differently depending on our needs.

Generate MipMaps: When a texture is saved with MipMaps it is saved with smaller versions of itself stored inside the texture. These smaller textures get used when the games texture settings are not set to the largest option. This helps to make sure the game looks correct.

The other settings are not important, so we don't need to cover those just yet.

For our green robes we need to make sure Generate MipMaps is checked and that our Compression is DXT1, once those have been selected you can save your texture.

Hi, firstly, as a lot of the early diagrams are missing this has been somewhat more difficult than I was hoping. Anyhow, I've got as far as recoloring the robes. That bit was easy, even without the pics. Trouble is I'm stuck on the MipMaps bit. I'm using GIMP, and it doesn't ask to load MipMaps, so when I try to save I don't get the Generate MipMaps check option nor any of the DXT compression options.

Yep, got that. I downloaded the "gimp-dds-win64-2.2.1.zip" file (presumably for 64bit systems, right?). That's how I got it to show the robes. But I still don't see anything about MipMaps in the GIMP interface, that is unless I've missed something?

I've tried "File" then "Open" but I'm not getting the small pop-up window. Instead I'm getting a large window called "Open Image", which doesn't say anything about MipMaps.

Rather late, but you two can move onto Lesson #2.

Is it still possible to do this tutorial with Gimp 2.8.10 ?
I have dds.exe in GIMP 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins, but get none of the save as options shown in the tutorial.
I tried the link to Paint.Net & got a virus warning.

I don't know if it's possible as I no longer use GIMP :)

Sorry to butt in, but in GIMP you will need to use the 'Export as' option under 'File'. Hope this helps :)
