Identifying a replacement motherboard

Hey all!,

About four months ago, a drunk driver uprooted a powerline next to my home, setting my mobo on a slow and steady decline until complete hardware failure.

Ive been unable so far to identify my motherboard, but I do know the motherboard was replaced, with as far as my memory goes, was an Nvidia NForce 550, does anybody know a current gen MOBO with the same specs? all the other hardware is fine and id like to just plug and play.

Thanks all,

Nek

Socket AM2, Memory is DDR2 (240 pin)... Windows tends to get annoyed if you swap the system board... some folks are able to just reboot, and windows figures it out, others have to reinstall windows again.....

I can find a couple of these on NewEgg... (not the exact model though, unfortunately) but, one is micro-ATX, and uses SO-DIMM memory..... (laptop) the other has only two memory slots.... What country you in?

Buying a board that out of date brand new may be a bad idea. If you think about the work involved in replacing your motherboard and re-installing Windows, plus the price of the board it's a lot to still have an outdated PC when your done. If you can pull off a little more money you'd be way further ahead to replace the Motherboard/CPU/RAM all at once. You'd have to watch things like the hard-drive type but basicly you should be able to re-use the rest of your components.

.Hi again,

So I would be better off buying a new board, cpu, and ram...suggestions? My rig is an old xps 710 which ive heard has quite a few irreplaceable parts, I know it has quite a bit done to it (it runs everything I throw at it).

Any recommendations would be wonderful.

Thanks,

Nek

Sorry to jump in here but is this your system? http://support.dell....ml/appendix.htm

According to the specs for that computer it has an Intel processor and not an AM2 socket -----> AMD processor. It might be easier to find something that your cpu can go on than finding an older AMD board. But the question remains is if your system is going to pieces in a large part to a power failure/spike you may be replacing one part after another until its stable again and there's no telling what all was damaged at the time that is now coming to light.

Couple of things that may or may not help.. If you have homeowners insurance or rental insurance or if you live at home with your parents( I don't know your situaltion) electrical damage to the computer may be covered under the policy. I've replaced a number of computers over the years for my customers when their systems were taken out in that manner and it it was covered under an existing insurance policy of the types I mentioned.

If the above options are not available to you. For Hey You or I to help with suggestions for a new system it would help to know how much are you willing to spend and do you have any preferences on CPUs, Graphics cards and hard drive size/speed.....

Also are you looking for a prebuilt brand name or would you consider saving yourself a lot of money by building it yourself. The last option would give you the greater flexibility in that you have a choice on what you put in it based on your preferences/finances. You can build a pretty decent gaming computer for around $600 to $1000 or more depending on what you want.

If you are concerned about building your own there are a number of us here that have built our own and we try to help those that need it .... DarkRider is one example of building his own first computer. Donnato is another...

I'm more comfortable with AMD processors and ATI graphics..... I'd be glad to spec one out for you .. Can you giv eme an idea of how much you are willing to invest in the system? It wouldn't do me much good to spec out a $2000 high end system when you are looking at about $1000.00.. However I can fine tune things based on your requirement for high end graphics and processing with a better idea of the financial restraints... And I'm pretty sure that Hey You and Wind would be better able to price out an Intel system with Nvidia graphics if they had a better idea of what you are looking to invest. I'm pretty sure they are both more familar with the Intel and Nvidia equipment than I am and this way you'd have a better comparison to work with. :)

PS.. When I spec this out for you I will do it item by item with a link to the source so if you decide to go that route you have all the necessary information in hand for what you would need to order.

I'll start looking tonight.. I just placed an order this morning and was kind of looking around while I was placing my order.

BTW... any links I give you will take you to the parts that I've come up with.. You are free to look around in the various sections and if you see something that you prefer and think might suit your needs better feel free to do it.. That's the main reason I give direct links... :)

If hardware doesn't fail outright, a power surge can introduce issues that slowly get worse over time. I've had to replace a motherboard, RAM, and soon a CPU because I bought a faulty power supply when I built this computer. The problem with my CPU is that it'll do a hard lock (just freeze with no beeps or other errors) and will continue to do so until I replace the thermal paste. I've had to do this at least a half-dozen times over the summer so I think it's time for a new chip.

Okay.. well this is what I spec'ed out for ya.... I'll put *** by things you can interchange for higher or lower $$ performance:

***Case - 1 ea Corsair 500R - $135.00 - http://biz.tigerdire...&srkey=c13-6500

Motherboard - 1 ea ASUS M5A99X EVO - $115.00 - http://biz.tigerdire...srkey=a455-3058

CPU - 1 ea AMD 8 Core 3.6GHz - $200.00 - http://biz.tigerdire...&srkey=a79-8150

***Memory - Corasir Vengence DDR3-1600MHz - 8Gigs - $45.00, 16 gigs - $186.00 - http://biz.tigerdire...&srkey=c13-5720 or http://biz.tigerdire...749425&csid=_23

*** PowerSupply - 1 ea Corsair TX750 V2 Power - $110.00 - http://biz.tigerdire...&srkey=c13-2802

***Hard Drive - 1 ea WD Black WD1002FAEX 1 TB - $120.00 - http://biz.tigerdire...ey=tsd-1000faex

***Graphics - 1 ea Radeon HD 7970 Black Edition 3024 RAM - $415.00 - http://biz.tigerdire...srkey=p450-7972

***Additional Fans - SP120 Quiet Edition 120mm Fan Twin Pack - $30.00 - http://biz.tigerdire...&srkey=c13-6701

Can use any fans of your choice - ThermalTake has some good ones and get use your own preference.

***DVD-Blue Ray burner - 1 ea Lite-On - $75.00 - http://biz.tigerdire...p?EdpNo=1140079

***Thermal Paste - 1 ea TG1 Extreme High Grade - $14.00 - http://biz.tigerdire...srkey=t925-1256

Okay.. total price as spec'ed with 8 gigs RAM - $1259.00

16 gigs RAM - $1400.00

First of all this motherboard is compatiable with ATI/AMD graphics cards and Nivida cards. Board will hold up to 3 cards so if you want to run more than one figure double or triple the the price on graphics cards. Some one else with more knowledge of Nvida cards can give you recommendations. If you want to run more cards look at the 850 watt or 1200 watt power supply and adjust $$$ accordingly. If you want water cooling instead of the stock fan for the CPU add about $100.00. Figured if you're spending this much money that you'd want DVD-Blue-Ray but you can go with just DVD for about $25.00 give or take.

Some of the items here have rebates and I priced with rebates ( don't think there's that much difference) You can compare.... Main thing is that I spec'ed it out for you and while you are on the site looking at the individual components you can look at other compariable items and you can go with what you thing is best.. motherboard/CPU/Memory are spec'ed to AMD's recommendations and if you change boards look up qualified memory and compatible CPUs.

HTH

PS.. if you decide to go with this or equivalent system I can give you my sales repre's number and tell him I referred you and you probably get a few price breaks. Already cleared it with my reprep. :)
