Broken Cyclinder Shading

Hello, created an account here to get some help on something that has brought me to tears. Why can't Skyrim modding be easier ;_;

My problem occurs when I follow some simple steps in blender:

1. Create Cyclinder

2. Loop cut the side edges twice near both edges

3. Transform those new loops so they are bigger.

4. Export .3ds file

5. Import .3ds file

6. Get the below:

This is what it looks like in Blender:

I tried installing blender 2.49, but I couldn't get it to work on my computer.

Looks like that is a split in the mesh. You need to have the verts merged to allow for the shading to blend properly.

Skyrim, or Bethesda games in general, are among the easiest to mod, especially considering that you can literally scrap the entire game and make your own from scratch. How many other games let you do that?
