Limitations in Worldspace/File size

Hello,

what information do we have about Oblivion's ESM file, and about worldspace size limitations?
How big might a worldspace become theoretically? And how big in practice? M.E.R.P. is big, Ubanga is big, how big can we get?

I have searched the internet, but with so many sites gone to oblivion ( clever pun, that! -- but it illustrates a minor problem whith doing internet research on Oblivion (the game) ), there might be information in your heads which had been lost on the internet.

I would also be grateful for replies like "Follow the signs, stupid!" ( :rtfm:), if only you felt it in your heart to actually show me the signs to follow .

With kind regards,
Maxim

I remember following the topic when it first came up. The biggest problem that I think they all faced is on the X axis you cannot go more than 4 quads across. Which is the -64, 0 and 64, 0 cells havok just in the core engine code does not work. HOWEVER on the Y axis you can do all 16 quads.

This was a huge conversation on the official forums and I think to a degree someone had done some ini fixes(I for some reason cannot remember their name right now). I don't remember if anything works beyond that point or not.

Thank you for replying! This has been very helpful. Though this is bad news.

Vouivre, I have not yet been able to locate said thread, but I keep trying. Probably that person managed to put some of those undocumented INI options to good use :).

HeyYou, thanks for the link, that's an interesting read, with nice ideas for work-arounds.  So it is still an issue with Skyrim ( or, apparently has become even worse ) ... It must devs give real trouble to eliminate this bug.

Cheers, Maxim.

@Vouivre: Thank you, that was an interesting read. ShadeMe, of course :D.  The link you provided points to another Skyrim related topic. But from this thread I have learned good news for Oblivion: The opening post by thekarithian states in a matter-of-fact way that Oblivion acturally can do the full range of 16x16 quads.

Does anybody have experience with the stability of such large worlds? M.E.R.P., as I understand, was a 16x16 world, but I found it to be very crashy towards the East ( of course it sadly had to be left in an early stage ).

Thank you.

M.

For Oblivion on the 16x16 quads I honestly don't know to be perfectly honest. The only issue for crashing I can see is potentially memory issues with it not being purged properly. But with the time settings from Oblivion and any mods.. The cells would be purged perhaps by the time you reached another country on the map. To go from one corner to the other? I'd expect 2-3 days+ by horse
