Where I've been

Those that were here will remember that over the last summer (or winter for the north) that I was trying to spend more time around the forums, however in January I disappeared again. Considering whats happened and where I'm at now its a good time to post this to let you guys know.

For the past 4 months I've been quite sick with what has be diagnosed as an unknown balance disorder. After having a mild cold in January a part of my right ear which control balance was damaged or effected in some way which let me unable to do much. Something as simple as walking can be difficult and gives me a crippling headache within minutes, so obviously I cannot drive nor go and do much. This also led to dropping my university courses as I couldn't attend, however since I am at the end part of my studies I had to finish a research project that I could do from home, so that has occupied the hours when I'm well enough to work. Using a desktop is impossible, since it requires sitting up, but lucky using my laptop in a high-back chair does not cause problems, so that's what my life is at the moment.

The area effected is one with very little research, they don't even understand how it works yet. This means they don't know whats caused this, don't have a name for the condition and there is no simple treatment. If I was doing medicine I would be my own research project. Yesterday I started physiotherapy which I is supposed to re-train the part of my brain that controls balance to understand the change in signals from my ears. The physio is simply to make my head hurt so much that it stops hurting, which as you can imagine is not very fun. I've got a deadline of 1 month until I have to stand and give a seminar on my research project, so for the moment that is my aim.

Thanks for reading.

An unfortunate circumstance Mage-o, hope everything gets better for you and we'll be cheering you on to reaching your goals. Even the worst, most disruptive things that happen in life can lead somewhere unexpectedly adventurous, here's to hoping this is just the start of an epic journey. :toast:

Think of it as you are paving the way into previously unknown areas of medical science! You are modern day explorer!

Best of luck and I hope you recover, or at the very least, are able to regain control and live a normal life.

Where are we? 6 months on now, time for and 'update'.

Started getting better late May, before taking a bad turn and basically too sick to get out of bed for a month and a half. Was moved to a Neurologist to look for a new cause, and also to try some different medication. Am now on a stupid high amount of migraine medication that at least lets me sit around and do some work on my laptop (though sitting at a desktop for a period of time is too difficult).

I've had a bucket of tests that haven't turned up much yet, though they have suggested there might be something wrong with my blood pressure or heart, I'll have to wait until I see the specialist again with the last lot of results.

So basically I'm still at the same point as 6 months ago, I do try to get on TESA....but I just seem to keep forgetting.

Have your doctors tried any antibiotics or antivirals, Mage? Or just running you through various pain meds?

Thanks everyone. :)

Yeah, that was the first thing they tried back at the start of the year. Before this, sinus infections were the main cause for a migraine, so as soon as I got one a round of antibiotics would be used to clear it up. It's not really painkillers that I'm on (since painkillers actually do very little for the type of pain I have), it's a anti-migraine medication that suppresses symptoms caused by migraine. But after this long you just start getting used to having some pain at all times.

The problem is that migraine can be caused by SOOO many things, and also many other things can have migraine like symptoms, so we just work through the tests and try to find a cause. As I said, this last round of tests have finally revealed some problems, so hopefully the cause will be found soon.

Has any consideration been given to bacterial infections?  I am just recovering from nearly 5 years of them myself.  It takes forever to get a correct diagnosis and then the correct medication and all the side-effects.

Good luck to you, and I hope that you get some answers soon.
