Got a job in engineering- not for this 6 year mechatronics degree- for Blender!

For our purposes, I'd say there's no secret to blender. Once you've got box modelling, UV mapping, and maybe vertex weighting under your belt, you can pretty much do anything you'll need for custom assets.
If I could give any advice, it would be that reference images make it a lot easier and faster, and you should try to get at least two orthographic pictures of your subject.
