  1. Seriously? I have to agree with echo here - its not anymore about what is feasible and possible but about get out there and do it. By now we have gathered so much information but we dont know anything at all about actually doing it. Explorers on earth where not prepared for different climates and living conditions either and they still just did it - many died of course but others learned from those errors and improved the next attempt.

I would actually volunteer immediately - its not about perfection at this stage but about getting out there finally. We still havnt even tried to set anything up on the moon which would be a starting point. Trying to simulate on earth will just give us so much information to delay further instead of actually having people trying it.

  2. hello everyone,

as there has been a bit of confusion as of the licensing of 3ds max i thought i post this little guide how it works legally correct. First i like to explain the difference of the trial and the student versions here:

    1. Autodesk offers free 30-day trials for their software. These trials are meant for evaluation purposes only - not meant for any kind of production at all.

    2. Additionally Autodesk offers so called student-licenses. These licenses are usually full featured products with a license duration and specific limitations to what kind of support you are eligable to get for it. They are limited to educational usage and not meant for any kind of commercial work or payed-for results.

The license you would like to use as a modder for non-commercial, educational usage is of course a student license. Recent updates to the licensing text have caused some kind of misunderstanding as for some countries the educational license requires you to be

enrolled at a recognized degree-granting or certificate-granting educational institution in a degree-granting or certificate-granting education program for three (3) or more credit hours, or in a certificate program of nine (9) months or longer.

I am not going to tell you how to work around or fulfill these requirements. If you feel you dont fit into this category then you can still work with the trial and follow this procedure here to renew the license for your trial when its about to expire.

    1. Head over to the autodesk website

    2. There have been recent changes in both design and structure to the website - dont get confused yet. The area you want to register in is found in 'Communities' - select 'Students & Educators'.

    3. You will see 'Free software for students' - select 'Popular' and from there 3ds max

    4. Follow the steps to register or sign in

    5. In the section 'Select the free software you want' you want to select 3dsmax 2012 for your OS and language
Why 2012? The existing nif-plugins work fine with 2012 and wont work with 2013 and newer versions yet.

  3. Dont know if you caught it still in the shoutbox: But you should make sure that the equipment you are trying to put on that 'transformed' char is eligable for that kind of race. So it would have to be active in the armorAddon part in the section additonal races - it has to be enabled for those vampire races - whatever they are called in dawnguard. I assume the vampire lord is a special race probably since its a transformation with wings and stuff.

  4. You mention quads and weird in one sentence - but for anything organic quads is the choice you would like to go for. The extra vertex compared to triangles makes moving and bending the mesh a lot smoother including the attached textures.

I see the point for an engine to reduce number of vertexes to the absolute necessary - so using triangles for the majority of architecture and static stuff is the way to go. But since you introduced your 'person' dont you think you might need to consider the usage of quads as well?

  5. Insta crashes usually tend to be related to missing master files for a esp. Might sound silly - but did you make sure that all data files where active when you tried to start from the regular launcher?

Instead of playing around with a mix of skse and steam i suggest following:

Remove skse and the related dll's in the main skyrim folder and skse subdirectory first. Delete skyrim.ini.skyrimprefs.ini from your .../my games folder. Now start the regular skyrim launcher, get your settings/options right, check that data files are active - launch.

If everything is as you described skyrim should now start with proper settings and should have created a new skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini. You will probably get messages abiut skse isnt running - dont worry. If you can start a new game and actually see something ingame - leave again and first now reinstall skse.

Launching via skse should  now work properly again.

  6. My name origins from a sentence one of my first pen&paper characters used to say a lot. The char was a thief named Clepto and in my D&D group i was mostly send ahead of the group to check for traps and alike. Whenever i told them i couldnt find anything there was usually at least one in the group having doubts and so i replied: Dont worry - its super safe. After a while they started calling me Dwiss instead and i kept it for many characters as in Everquest, Everquest2, Ultima Online etc.

  7. What you describe sounds pretty much exactly what is already found ingame - namely Dead Men's Respite which is part of the King Olaf's Verse quest. Maybe checking the settings of that quest and the location settings in the CK will give you a good idea how that has been implemented. Its part of the 'Tending the flames' quest given by the Bard's college.

The actor you would like to look at is 'MS05_dunDeadMensRespite_Svaknir' - he is a ghost that appears when you trigger certain points in the dungeon. The quest is named 'MS05_dunDeadMensRespiteQST'.

The short version is that its a mix of quest stages and script snippets to be executed at those stages. If you look at the Quest you will see the script used etc

  8. This is something that i was interested in as well as i hate it that scripted followers like Vilja seem to be able to cast without the regular limitations. I checked your pointer and it suggests to use a AI package that uses 'UseMagic'-procedure. The notes to that one also mention : quote'Unlike when using the Cast function, the actor will play the casting animations. However, magicka is still not depleted'. This is really annoying - any more pointers maybe Willie?

  9. To my best knowledge there is no script function that allows you to 'catch' the fire/release-string-of-bow-state. Which makes it kind of hard to achieve what you explain.

If you would slow time when you hit something that would be something different. You could achieve that by creating special ammo that has the slow time effect - the magic effect is called VoiceSlowTimeEffect. You would need to attach that to your ammo.

The other option i see if you insist on scripting would be to check for the controls - you can get the release state of the pressed buttons/controls and then 'fire' your slowtime magic effect whenever that particular button/control is released.

As Brett suggested the Steady Hand perk: It changes the bowspeedbonus - that means actor value "bowspeedbonus" affects the speed of the world around you when you draw an arrow - and any actor value can be set/changed via a script of course. Normal value for it is 1 and it would have to be set to something lower like 0.5 or 0.25 to actually affect speed of the world around you.
