I found this article EXTREMELY useful, not only for retexturing, but also for adapting the original texture to a drastically modified version of a mesh, without having to edit to the original .dds files using GIMP or PhotoShop (something I'm not good at).
To be more specific, I had modified the burgundy middleclass pants in Blender to fit a different body type, resulting in texture distortion (mainly in the belt region). Editing the UV in Nifskope helped me solve the problem.
