Care to do some testing? Somebody on the Unity Technologies forums mentioned his computer having a test result of 145 on https://web.basemark.com/

I did the test for my computer and got 295.31. Now I have no idea what I must think about that if I cannot  compare with others' computers... ;)

I got 655.58 with my secondary computer.

    i5 4690K @3.5GHz, 16GB of RAM, and a GTX 970 graphics card.

Now I wonder how my main computer will do...

At some point there will be larger mod project that do go the paid route which have significant content and people will be willing to pay a small amount for them. I expect that if there are large content mods then at some point people will make pirate copies of it and that'll be it.

This was one of my first thoughts. You thought people stealing mods was bad before, this will only escalate that. Someone will buy it then just upload the mod somewhere else.

  3. Think of it as you are paving the way into previously unknown areas of medical science! You are modern day explorer!

Best of luck and I hope you recover, or at the very least, are able to regain control and live a normal life.

  4. The bulk of my modding exposure came from the Oblivion era. I grew to think of modding as a hobby, and trying to get money for a mod was taboo. When my modding scope branched out to Minecraft, I was basically struck by a sledge hammer at how rampit "adfly" links were used for texture packs and whatnot. It sickened me. Whenever I had the chance, I would make a comment about how the TES modding community basically shunned monetization of mods. If this is truly how Bethesda feels about their modding community, then I will sadly have to turn away from them.

The news is young, so I will wait to see how things progress and what, if anything, Bethesda has to say after seeing the initial public reaction.

Dark times are upon us. I hope they don't last long.

  5. Looks like that is a split in the mesh. You need to have the verts merged to allow for the shading to blend properly.

Skyrim, or Bethesda games in general, are among the easiest to mod, especially considering that you can literally scrap the entire game and make your own from scratch. How many other games let you do that?

  6. Meets, greets, and a bottle of sweets! (Does that even rhyme? I duno.)

Haters gunna hate, but I think if you release things here on TESA, then you won't have to worry too much about overly negative comments. Only thing you have to worry about is constructive criticism aimed at improving your skills. The staff here are always friendly, from personal experience as an ex-staff member, so if anyone is being overly rude and... well, unpleasant, they will take care of them.  :salute:

Enjoy your time here. It really is a great place.

  7. I remember there being something about being able to "draw" a line in which navmesh past that point is not "active", that way NPCs don't see, so wont even use it, so no funky walking into wall miss-haps. Cant remember what it is, but I know it exists.

For starters, Mars is great for growing plants. The dirt is rich in minerals, plenty of CO2 and sunlight. It has been studied for many years, and corn is actually rather easy to grow given mars's conditions.

Ya I'm going to need your sources on that _echo. Reduced pressure, reduced sunlight, radiation, micro-gravity and a different atmosphere are big problems to overcome.

Basically it boils down to the low gravity helping with water retention in the soil, meaning less water needed to grow crops. An adapted atmosphere is needed, so green-houses will need to be set up, but they don't have to mimic earth perfectly in order to work just as well.

  9. IIRC, the alpha channel also determines the level of "shiny" an texture has. Full white is dull and flat, black is bright and shiny, or was it the other way around?

Basically the textures that don't seem to need it use it to done down the shine due to directional lighting "reflecting" off it. In the case of stones and grass, they don't want much shine.

  10. Isn't this how the Reavers happened in Firefly? Count me out, I don't do anything that requires fallible technology to breathe. XD

Thought they were created due to an adverse reaction to a special chemical that was released in the air to cause people to be calm. Most became so calm they just stopped moving and died, while some became violent and primal.

  11. This would unfortunately fail simply because of the volunteer part. Astronauts train for years just to orbit the Earth a couple times. The knowledge you would need to have to run a Martian base is NOT something they are leaving to 20 yr olds found on the internet.

They will undoubtedly have thousands upon thousands of applicants, which they will screen for the best fit.

I think its a pretty optimistic goal. After the last shuttle lands, what are they gonna do for a sustainable food/water source? Waste management? Medical care?

I think technology has a long way to go before this is will work. Plus.... the real estate leaves much to be desired, I think I'd go crazy living in a little pod like that! Plus.... no TESA! Pfffft.... count me out!

Logically they will/are/have thought of all this. Obviously this one snip-it of information in the post isn't all the details.

For starters, Mars is great for growing plants. The dirt is rich in minerals, plenty of CO2 and sunlight. It has been studied for many years, and corn is actually rather easy to grow given mars's conditions.

Wast management will probably be along the same lines as the ISS. A system to extract water and other minerals from waste and recycle them.

Medical care is a trickier one, but that would be the same for any expedition, even back in the old days. You just have to make due, and try your best not to get hurt or sick. Hardly a reason to halt advancement though.

A lot of things involving space travel have been suspended because of technological advancement. If we send people now, we can do it better in 5 years, so lets wait. But in 5 years, you can do it better and more efficiently in another 5. So when do you actually DO something? Someone has to take the initiative and just get out there and start the process.

  12. For #1, it really is dependant on the individual's system. The more the game has to load, the more potential for lag there will be, as such, the more powerful the person's computer, the more it can handle before starting to show signs of overload.

General rule is to keep it as simple as possible. Do you REALLY need every light source to cast dynamic shadows? Probably not. Do you NEED to cover everything in ivy and flora? Again, probably not. Keep things simple and to the point and cut where you can. Havoked clutter is another biggie, as they need to invoke the physics engine. The more physics the game needs to process, the more potential for lag. Same with scripts. The more you have running, the more CPU time is needed, thus, like a parrot, the more potential for lag.

That said, you might look into render boxes. (Is that their technical name?) Basically they are boxes you use to encase parts of your interior levels and are connected via "portals" (Don't worry, no loading screens) This way the game only renders (though still loads) what is visible inside the boxes. There is a an official Bethesda tutorial for this on Youtube.

Also something to remember. Light sources are heavy on the rendering, and there is a hard limit of 4 omni lights (No shadows) and 3 shadow casting lights. If there is more then that on screen (Even if they are behind objects and you aren't using render boxes, they will start to turn on and/or off.
