  1. Not sure why I'm have trouble saving with some and not others, but oh well. So, it's a bounding radius issue, eh? Interesting. Have you tried the "Search & Replace" technique instead of/in addition to using TES4Edit?

Out of curiosity, would plugins created with the CSE require OBSE in order to work if no OBSE functions are used?

Yeah, the trouble saving just for creating the light entry alone is odd, because I've never seen it and don't know of anyone else who has. Just the placement issue.

As long as you don't use OBSE specific functions your mod won't need OBSE.

@Willie: Could be, I have an AMD CPU. Maybe AMD is more strict about this?

  2. Step #3 crashing is a well known issue in the CS. Creating new lights often results in a crash, because the bounding radius on the light is set to 0 until a copy can be placed into the world.

I've never had issue with SAVING the mod, only when trying to place a freshly created light into the render window. I then have to use TES4Edit to manually edit in a value for the bounds radius before I can get it to place in the render window.

I think ShadeMe said this is going to be fixed in the next release of the Construction Set Extender.

  3. Yes, they were giving you the brush off. Out of curiosity, was it Brad, Candice, Gerry, George or Jeff Miller? If it was Jeff he has a full plate, but he also has more staff than the others. He's chairman of the Veteran's Affairs Committee. Talk about complaints, whew! He's also on Armed Services and Intelligence; both busy committees.

Candice, she was nice enough about the whole thing but definitely thought it best to pursue via a civil attorney.

The rest of what you're getting at with the FBI involves criminal complaints and that almost never happens unless you're dealing with something like a Chinese counterfeiting ring. Besides, as I mentioned, the damages threshold hasn't been met yet. The FBI isn't going to touch it.

The good news is, I contacted APY over at PES/IGN and he commented in the BGS thread that IGN may be interested in pursuing a DMCA complaint through their legal department. If that's the case, I've gained an enormous amount of respect for PES/IGN just for even considering the possibility.

  4. Just because I wanted to see for myself what the result would be, I called Congressman Miller's office and informed them of the situation. Their advice was what I fully expected going in - I should contact an attorney and file a civil suit. I explained that the offending party is in another country but they said the matter was entirely for the courts to handle and that it wasn't something the House had jurisdiction over.

Maybe they're just politely giving me the brush off, I suspect that they really wanted to just flat out tell me they had better things to do than try to stir up the State Dept. over a minor copyright issue.

  5. Folks are complaining they have no protection. You only get protection if you ask for it.

Indeed, but come on. Not trying to be a jerk about this, but, priorities. The FBI and the US Attorney's Office have FAR better things to be doing with our tax dollars than pursuing claims from modders who may not even HAVE a claim.

These are the things your congressman lives for. They all have a staff to write letters to federal agencies for constituents. Call him up and rag on his staff.

I think my congressman has far more important matters to be taking up than worrying about whether my mod for a video game has been stolen or not.

Besides, it appears Softpedia.com is willing to comply with a simple request from the author. So there's no need to create diplomatic issues over it :)

Too bad many of us have no access to that forum, would have been nice to know in a public venue a couple weeks ago.

Yeah, and in hindsight I suppose I could have raised the issue here or at BGS but the thread died down with not much coming of it. Not a lot of folks at the time had their stuff ripped and uploaded. When WhoGuru raised the alarm, it was clear the issue had gotten far bigger than before. Another Strategy Informer in the making.

  6. Well this, and the thread at BGS, aren't the first place this site has been mentioned. The "mooders only" forum on Nexus has a thread that's been running for a couple of weeks now.

I should get them to pull the ULs now assuming that's even possible since the Council didn't actually MAKE them :P

  7. The FBI? Interpol? State Department? NATO? I think that would be taking things WAY too far. The FBI won't even pay attention to you unless the crime you're reporting is worth more than $10,000 or so. Making an international incident out of all this isn't going anywhere at all, regardless of our status with Romania.

I am familiar with Peer 1, because my company used to do business with them. They were formerly known as Server Beach. IMO they are reputable and ethical, and I think complaining to them about abuse has at least some potential to get results.

This is far more likely to produce results if Softpedia themselves don't comply. Ask to have your stuff taken down, if they refuse, THEN report them to their host, and if necessary use a DMCA notice to do it formally. If they're a reputable company they'll act on it properly.

EDIT: Oh, and just FYI folks, I Googled the page again, went to where Google said my mod should be, it's gone. The link turns up 404.

  8. Mannimagnus had a good idea, so I dug a bit, and there's probably about zero chance of them caring what we think. Softpedia.com's domain contacts are all in Romania. Their hosting however is being provided by a company in Atlanta, called Peer 1 Dedicated Hosting. The only way you'll get the hosting company's attention is with a DMCA takedown notice. They're not going to interfere without at least that much. Fortunately a DMCA takedown notice is something you can send for free (or preferably by certified mail) and hope the hosting company takes it seriously.

Don't bother pursuing their DNS provider, that's also being handled in Romania. The hosting provider is the only angle worth going for if anyone feels strongly enough about this to take it this far.

Best to hope they respect our wishes and take things down when asked.

  9. This mod is awesome. One thing though - during Chargen if you are playing through the normal prison routine, this mod was interrupting things A LOT.

Is your update fixing this in general or only for specific cases? If the latter, perhaps you could add a check to only trigger these if the CharacterGen quest is at stage 88 or higher?

It's not clear if the IsTalking check is going to catch it all or not.

  10. Yep. Check cords, outlet, surge protector overload reset button, and the circuit breaker outside if it's on a separate circuit from the rest of the room. If all that checks out, PSU would be my first guess. Since you ARE seeing indications of power flow though, after the PSU I'd suspect the motherboard.

  11. That many user records stolen.

Yes I've already been deleted several spam mail for a few days now. Do you have a link to LastPass?

Yep, it's actually closer to 300,000 users along with some sort of codes for Brink.

LastPass is a Firefox extension. Though after I checked into it I think I'll pass and just use Firefox's internal password management and use KeePass to generate them. Main reason being LastPass stores the information remotely, which is once you think about it about as dumb an idea as there can be for security.

  12. @Fearrabbit: Interesting point about making the overhauls take us little guys into account. I hadn't thought about that angle :P

@Meo: That sort of thing would be very cool to see. Not just with vanilla locations either but with mods that added stuff, to see how those placed grew up, or died off, or whatever.

I think one of the best possible things though would be if something like Onra's heightmaps or the TR maps gets done early in the life cycle rather than very late. Sets the stage that way. It all depends on how familiar feeling the CK ends up being.

  13. If you can't do a full system upgrade, then yes, the video card update would be your best bet. Something with at least 1GB on it, though 2GB would hedge things against future capabilities for quite some time.

Longer term, you'll definitely want to make the jump to a 64 bit OS. Things may not take big advantage of them now but as time goes on, more things will. Especially once Windows 7 passes that magic number of 50% market share.

  14. Always something with these board mods. Just like with OB mods, people can crank out some incredible stuff, but much of it isn't tested very well. Although I guess I can't fault this one since it may not have had a chance to get used on a large site before coming here.

That's one thing I never liked about how IPB's internal coding does things. Even back in the old days of Invisionboard 1.3 they used to store all this stuff in HTML form instead of as the actual bbcode, so that once you made a big mistake somewhere it NEVER went away even if you undid the code that initially caused it. I guess they've never learned that lesson.

The forum software I code for doesn't suffer this as it never stores generated HTML in posts unless the user puts it there on purpose. So the worst that happens in my case is some old codes that won't parse anymore are floating around, they just get spit out as raw text instead.

  15. Checked the path grids in that worldspace lately? NPCs falling from the sky sounds a lot like what was happening in Verona Bay when someone had one of their patches out of order and it messed up the path grid.
