  1. I build my own every time. Not because I object to buying pre-built, but because I can never seem to find the capacity I want. As far as support is concerned, I mostly don't need it. Although I have to say ASUS support, although spotty, is the most technologically competent.

  2. Ah, good points HeyYou and Arion that`s my thinking too. Good point about checking with the cable folks.I`m really glad I posted this. Thank you all so much. I`m kinda looking at the motorola SB6120 but I`d better check further.

    This is a good piece, I've been using one for quite a while, no issues, and it beats paying $60.00/year :D

  3. A couple of comments.

    Thermaltake, Corsair, OCZ; all, generally good stuff...check reviews.

    Memtest86: http://www.memtest.org// Will help rule out failing memory.

    Back to PSU's.

    Single 12 volt rails are nice, but in the very high power range, they are problematical.

    With multiple 12 volt rails, you, obviously, have to ensure that the load is properly balanced.

    One other thing; you stated an issue with the 5 volt line. Using lots of USB devices?

    If so, consider getting an externally powered USB port (Belkin makes a nice one). The 5 volt line is very often overlooked, and very often the source of otherwise inexplicable shutdowns.

    Good luck

  4. For all of the grace, good manners and patience you've displayed in troubleshooting this, I think you really, really deserve a problem-free reinstallation of Oblivion. And cookies. I will keep my fingers crossed for you, Sealwarrior. :rofl:

    Boy, I so agree, Sealwarrior has been one of the politest and most courteous posters it has ever been my pleasure to experience.

    Don't know if it's allowed, but here's a link to a uninstall/reinstall procedure that has worked for many people:

  5. A couple of things that may be relevant.

    Since you're using a soundcard (presumably with hardware acceleration), you should disable the motherboard audio.

    Consider reinstalling directx (redistributable is available at Microsoft)

    Since directx 11 is not fully backward compatible with directx 9. consider installing directx 9 (available at Microsoft or on your Oblivion disk)

    Lastly; when the sound stops, verify that the lines in the oblivion.ini

    bMusicEnabled=1

    bSoundEnabled=1

    did not get set to 0 somehow.

  6. I don't know if this is the right place to say this, but Fonger has probably forgotten more about TES games than most of us will ever know.

    I say it again, welcome to the famous Fonger (missed you, big time at Bethesda's forums)

  7. It's a GeForce 8600M GS. Yes I had no issues with that driver before the update problem and the failures to boot that resulted. What I don't understand is why installing the driver caused the no-boot problem.

    Edit: However, the most recent driver for that card is actually the 195.81 BETA not the 179.48. I was told at some point that using slightly older drivers would improve Oblivion's performance.

    This Video card seems to work best with the 186.18 drivers.

    Many users have reported problems with Oblivion and the 192xx drivers (I don't recall any remarks about the BETA drivers)
