I would go with a painting, maybe of something with water, nice and calming. And maybe a nice china vase in the middle of the mantle.

Good suggestions, both of you. Thank you! I agree that a lighter painting would be best- a dark scenic or still life could tip the whole ambiance into oppressive.

I think, to be quite honest, it is fine being bare. Sometimes, in my opinion, the best and most simple decoration is nothing. Just my two pents though.

Tamira and Dolly, thanks for the suggestions. ^ ^ I do think that the mantle could stay bare and the room would still look nice, but since I am aiming for a cluttered Victorian-ish feel, I am obliged to examine every nook and cranny and then festoon it with tchotchkes, knick-knacks and junk, if possible.
