Settings:

Game: trees and groundcovers by Vurt

CCC: everything off

MGE XE: SSAO, Godrays, Underwater Effects (plus distant land and reflection stuff); AA and AF off

SweetFX: SMAA (ultra), Bloom, HDR, LumaSharpen, Tonemap, Vibrance (all with minimal adjustments)

INI-settings: TLM

Needs a little adjustment but looks not too shabby.

Morrowind??!  Why, that's... so beautiful!

You seem to be doing everything right.  I, on the other hand, so clearly am not.

Willie, on your new computer you might be able to go to a way higher level (looking at the specs I saw).

Bess, it is actually, just the combination of a few really cheap effects. Always thought they would kill my FPS - like ENB once did with Oblivion - since my rig is not the strongest (i3 + HD 7770) but they perform really good compared to MGE and the GPU forced effects (most of all AA). So in case your rig can handle a modded  (MGSOish) Morrowind + MGE on rather good - not even highest - settings you might even gain FPS (~10-15 in my case) with these by replacing AA, Bloom and HDR with the SweetFX version, I even switched off AF cause I didn't see a difference that was worth the loss in FPS, actually, I saw none. From that point of view you are already on the winning site. Than you only need to add the effects one after another, combine them, see what you get and keep what you like. With the configuration tool SweetFX is pretty easy to handle. Also you can find a lot of example settings for various games on their site (unfortunately not for good old Morrowind). I didn't even change a lot of settings from the preset ones since I do not yet understand what does what. You could also use the FXAA tool to get similar effects but FXAA adds sort of a smear on the edges which SMAA does not.

Most important for me was to see whether it works out of the box at all which it does, and it turns out that it looks nice :) And, as you can see in the screen before this one, there are many different ways you can go, depending on the effects and settings used. Many effects can be used either way, making the game brighter or darker, more or less vibrant, and so on.

Gram, thank you for setting it out like this.  You make it seem less daunting, and I feel positively encouraged now!

You know, the fun starts, when you try to optimize those settings :D spend hours tweaking here and there, then switch out of game, look at the screens and think: no, that does not look like in game....
