  1. I don't mind doing it again.  Each time I do it, I'm getting better.   And I have one browser tab now permanently open to the Navmesh Cheat Sheet, and one tab open to 'Navmeshing the Nordic Stairs.'

Which is necessary, as there were actually 4 yellow border lines I needed to remove, not just one.

There's still quite a bit I need to grasp, such as understanding all the error messages about upside-down-normals or "Triangle 5 is connected to Triangle 6 but Triangle 6 is not connected to Triangle 5."   For now I'm just letting the Creation Kit delete the offending triangles, but my goal is to eventually be able to eyeball this stuff.

  2. I decided to start from scratch.  I actually went through both lessons 1 and 2 all over again, creating a 2nd farmhouse that I could experiment with just to practice Navmesh on without messing up everything else I was doing with food and wine and stuff.

And then I forgot to save. :(

But the third time, I believe I figured a system that works for me.  I enable V and G, throw down green verticles in open spaces and then split edges where I need to go around an object (bed, chair, or whatever.)  Then I merge where I can.  It's rather tedious and time-consuming compared to 'waking the dog' and the other methods people use, but the end result is much better than where I was 2 weeks ago.

  3. Every now and then, when I load up the Creation Kit, instead of everything being totally blank... it will be mostly blank, and will have some random thing like DefaultAshpile1 in the Object Window.  Or for variety, DefaultAshpile2.  This is before I have loaded any mods or skyrim, esm; this is just after the Creation Kit itself loads up.  Any ideas as to what's going on?

The Cell View and Render View windows are blank; this is just the Object Window.

  4. Okay, Navmesh kicked my behind.  I did the rest of us a day or so after completing Lesson 1, but it took me several days to figure out how the little red triangles worked, and even then I had to go and practice and play with the NavMesh cheat-sheet and try out various buttons and configurations.

  5. And here is the homework.  The lower floor has 2 tables and 6 seats, two at the fireplace and 4 by the tables.

The upper floor has the beds.  I'm not sure if both Wall Mounted Mudcrabs are visible in this angle, but you should be able to see all the pelts and baskets.  Edit-- yeah, if you click on the picture, you can see the mudcrabs and one of the baskets; the other basket is on the other floor.

And here is the extra credit:

I put the divider in first, then the end tables against the wall, then a pair of shelves against the divider.  Once I created a mini-bar, I was practicing moving it as one total piece so I moved it to the 2nd floor; this way I'd only need to upload one image.  You can see a bit of the candle horn chandelier in the lower left corner.

All in all, this was fun.  It took me several days to get comfortable but at least now I feel like I can fiddle with the Creation Kit without wrecking my game or accidentally deleting Riften.
  6. Hello everyone!  I realize I'm a bit late in the semester (and about 2 years behind everyone else) but the imminent release of the Elder Scrolls Online has got me interested in Skyrim again, so now I'm playing Dragonborn for the first time and trying my hand at modding.

This is a test post to see if my images ended up here all right; I took some screen caps of Lesson #1.  If this works I'll upload the homework part once it's all done.

  7. Hi everyone!  I am new here.  I actually found this place because I was tinkering with the Skyrim Creation Kit and getting nowhere, so I Googled 'Creation Kit help' and found this site.

I played the original Skyrim when it first came out 11/11/2011, but I never got Dragonborn until very recently.  Once I started playing Skyrim again, I decided to create a new character, and then I realized I wanted to mod Skyrim so that I'd have a new and different experience while working my new character up to head to Solstheim.

Two years ago, when the Creation Kit first came out, I did release a single mini-mod onto Steam, which I felt was rather mandatory: a single player-owned permanent chest at the Riverwood fast-travel point.  Lame as that sounds, I don't even remember how I did something so minor so now I am here and starting from scratch.
