FO3 install issue

Ok...I built this new PC and installed MW and OB with no problems...FO3 locks up in the char gen stasge. 6 times now I`ve tried different ways ...had to force shutdown every time. Everything just locks up and I can`t even CTRL+ALT+DEL out...I`ve tried waiting it out but at 30 minutes I called it quits...Any Ideas?

Most of the lockup issues in FO3 seem to stem from Game For Windows Live according to my reading, it was definitely the issue for me. Hadn't even realized it had sneakily installed itself at first. To test that you could try the GFWL disabler on Nexus, was a 100% turnaround for me.

Or, use FOSE (As well as the Pipboy Radius mod cus its awesome) and it will disable GFWL naturally.

Ok I see in the FOSE readme that I should have the FO3 patch/es installed. Is there an official patch...an unofficial patch? I`m having trouble searching info on that.

Ok Folks. I found the official patch and installed it, then FOSE...no soap. I get through the char gen and naming and such but then...freezola. I`ll try the GFWL disabler now Wind. Oh yeah...I launched the game with the fose_loader.exe.

Where did you install the game to? I think at the point you are looking up, the game is trying to write the autosave to the disk?

I put all my games on the D drive. I tried an install to the defaults but...same same. It freezes at random times. I`ve juiced up the settings on my Gfx card and engaged game booster, also disabled GFWL as Wind spoke of. This time I made it all the way to the BB gun range from my birthday party. Really wished I`d thought to save somewhere before the freeze.

Do you have the latest patch? (I haven't been keeping up with them...... as they more often than not broke stuff, while if fixed others.....) Any known issues with the version you are running?

Also, is this a clean, unmodded game?

Yes echo, it`s 1.7 and this is a brand new unmodded game. Just the DLC from the goty disc. I think I`ve also seen an unofficial patch, and do I need the FOSE extender?

EDIT: Sorry HY I missed your response but I read through the available info and didn`t see anything bad. Also I see where the FOSE Extended isn`t really something I need.

Dont have time, so...

Ive read that full system freezez are 80% of the time faulty hardware or bad drivers.

Check Drivers to up to date and compatability.

Try running with a single stick of ram. See how well that works.

Ok echo here`s the DxDiag. I would have thought that if this was a hardware/driver issue it would affect any disc I load but this is the only one with a problem.

EDIT: I just remembered, I need a good DVI cable...the VGA I`m using might be a bottleneck.

Could you click the "Save All Information" button and post that? It shows the whole report as well as some infor the GUI doesn't display.

Full system freezez are almost always a sign of a system problem and not a program problem. If you cant Ctrl+Alt+Del out of the program, then it goes deeper then just the program.

Thanks echo. I`ll post that when I get home this evening from work. I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to get out and it always works quickly. Yeah I`m beginning to think it`s a bottle neck somewhere mainly because the freeze most often happens just at the point of some transition, closing the pip boy for instance. When I use Game Booster it lasts a bit longer,and a bit more if I lower my settings (Iniial set up detects my system and automatically sets Ultra High). More and more I`m suspecting the monitor cable. I`ve been told it`s not that important but when I can I`ll get a proper DVI cord. Another thing...if music`s playing when it freezes the music keeps playing. If someone`s talking, they finish the dialog but if there`s an NPC response, it doesn`t play. Transition again.

Sounds like maybe a sound driver issue....... Post the info from the dxdiag when you get home. We can all have a look.

You bet HY thanks. I haven`t added a sound card yet so I`m running on the onboard chipset. I`m wondering though, why a driver issue would only affect FO and not any other games/media I run? Odd...

Do you run ffdshow on your system? I remember it caused problems for some people not only with Fallout3, but Oblivion also. I did a little searching and found some other people experiencing similar problems to what you describe. Here's the links I found if you'd like to read them to see if it is possibly the same?

Drats! I was hoping for an easy solution for you. I've got one more read for you, although I'm not sure it's applicable because I don't know if an Intel i-3 is a dual or quad core More than 2 cores in your machine? Play fallout 3? Then read on!

Double drats! I'm assuming this is your new build and your drivers are all the latest; if they're not you might want to do that (especially sound). Sometimes on-board sound doesn't like hardware acceleration, so you might want to try turning it off for a test? Win7, hrm, well in XP it would be found in the control panel/Sounds and Audion Devices/Properties/Advanced Audio, maybe something similar in Win7? I'm sorry I can't help you there.
