How to make A Shadow Shape?

I have wondered for a while if it is possible to make a shape that will cast a shadow to place under tables...to that there is a shadow from lights above them..it looks weird to have light under a table...

is there a way to make a rectangle or a square...ilke one of the canvases that we use for paintings...and then apply a opaque texture layer to it? so that it will cast a shadow or block light?

any ideas on this?

i will try using a painting to see if it works..of so then that will work for there are round paintings and other shapes and they wlll do the trick..but i hadnt tried it yet

Nothing in Oblivion casts shadows other then faces not facing the light source and the player + a few NPCs on screen have dynamic shadows.

The only thing you can do is look at what they did in fallout. They used a flat plane which was shaded black then faded to transparency along the edges of the object, but that was more used for simulating ambient occlusion rather then full on shadows.

thanks...there are shadows in the landscape, because we can turn them on and off, but for the interior lighitng i will have to study it more.
